MESSAGE FROM SENIOR DIRECTOR
Assalamualaikum wbr & Greetings…
Welcome and thank you for visiting the Official Portal of Marine Park and Resource Management Division (BTLPS), Department of Fisheries Malaysia.
BTLPS is responsible in the management of marine and inland fisheries resources. Inline with BTLPS missions to manage the nation’s fisheries resources efficiently, innovatively and environmental-friendly based on scientific information and good governance, this division is always looking for improvements and committed to implement various conservation, researches and educational efforts related to fisheries resources management.
Exploitation of fisheries resources, pollution and climate change effect especially in the rising of sea water temperature has been giving high impacts on marine life and its habitat. According to research conducted by Reef At Risk (2011), the excessive exploitation of fishery resources and unfriendly fisheries practices are a major threat to almost 55% of the world’s coral reefs. In addition, development activities in coastal areas and pollution from oceans and land each threaten 25% of the world’s reefs. The World Ocean Summit in its conference in 2012 stated that the rate of marine habitat loss is between 0.2% to 7% per annum.
Measures taken by the Government through the formation of protected areas such as the establishment of Marine Parks and river sanctuaries are seen as solutions that can promise effectiveness in protecting and conserving the country’s biodiversity resources. Management of effective fisheries resources protection areas will be able to control human threats to marine ecosystems and provide resilient habitats in the face of other threats in the future.
